The Course Materials Corner with Dr. Mike Moore
Something that I love (among many) about conferences focused on a particular function in higher education is the professional development that these opportunities provide. Whether Auxiliary Services, Admissions, Advising, or Academics, the ability to connect and collaborate in-person with peers can have a major impact on our jobs and our students. Conferences like NACAS C3X provide professionals with the ability to learn about new trends and best practices in Auxiliary Services.
I don’t know a lot about a lot, but I have spent enough time around faculty and course materials to know they are intertwined. Selecting the right course materials can provide faculty with professional development resources to help them feel more connected to and confident with their chosen material. However, quality resources alone are not enough to further faculty professional development. At Partner in Publishing, we work with a lot of great companies that support faculty in their pursuit of effective teaching and learning. Partners like the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) provide faculty development programs that take teaching to the next level–they are proven to be effective in improving student outcomes, retention, and revenue. When faculty have access to these kinds of programs, combined with the right course materials, they’re positioned to create lasting and meaningful learning experiences for all students.
In a conversation I had with ACUE President, Jonathan Gyurko, he points to higher education’s ability to turn out highly-skilled researchers and scholars, but the gap is in preparing those researchers and scholars to be teachers. Organizations like ACUE are changing higher education and student success through quality teaching. Ultimately, engaged, empowered teachers are the key to a dynamic and equitable learning environment.
I look forward to seeing you in the next edition of The EdTech Pulse.
